Distinguishing Sexuality

What distinguishes the difference between male and female when it comes to gender?

In our society, where some parents are choosing to allow their child to decide what gender it wants to be (regardless of what it was born to be, I.e male or female), how do we answer this important question?

As a Bible affirming Christian, I choose to go back to the first pages of the ancient boom of wisdom and ethics as my guide on this topic:

Genesis 1:27
"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

It is apparent from this passage that there are only two "kinds" of people in this world - male and female, or men and women.

When we are born, there are certain anatomical features that help us to decide "what" we are, but in our world, it is easy to get those parts removed or replaced if we so desire.

So where does that leave us?  We see from Scripture that God created male and female, "in His image" "according to His likeness." As image bearers of God, when we try to mess with the original design, we are in effect telling a lie about who God is, and what He creates.  It is as if we are shaking our fists at God and saying "I don't like what you made."

Isn't that dangerous?  Yes.  We might struggle with our sexuality in a host of different ways (some people struggle with same-sex attraction, others with a dislike or disgust for their gender), but does that justify our changing of who we are, into something we can handle? No.

We need to surrender our "truest selves" to the self Jesus would have us to be:

"Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness."  Romans 6:13 (NIV)
"For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live."  Romans 8:13 (NIV)
"Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."  Romans 12:1-2
Paul makes it abundantly clear that if we are Christians, and even if we are not (he specifically wrote to Believers), that there is an outcome to sin - death.  And whether or not we subject yourself to God's law or not, we are under it and the consequences of our life choices will play out in one of two ways in Eternity: Eternal life with Jesus, or Eternal suffering and separation from Jesus.

In Romans chapter 1, Paul describes the downfall of a culture, when they reject God's authority in their lives, and the end result?  Sexual perversion (male homosexuality and lesbianism).

"Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.
Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.
Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error."  Romans 1:22-27 (NIV)

And how wise do we Americans believe ourselves to be now that there is "sexual equality?" We believe that the supreme court decision was one of the best things to happen to our country - when in reality, it is our downfall.  Because, once we accept things which God explicitly says are wrong, and call them right, we open wide the flood gates to all kinds of sexual perversions.  What's next?  Bestiality?  Pedophilia?  Polygamy?   Basically anything you can imagine will be done in the name of "sexual freedom and equality" and many more lives will be destroyed, all because we don't want to bend our hearts and minds to Jesus. And lest we begin to think highly of ourselves as Christians, just remember that all sin is self-limiting.

In closing, I want to just share with you what I shared on the day the supreme court stood up in the place of God, declaring evil to be good:

First off, there is no such thing as "same sex marriage" because God defined and designed what marriage is, originally:"Jesus answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” Matthew 19:4-6Secondly, any law created by man which opposes God's law should be null and void. The Supreme Court has overridden each state's laws, which is a real shame. Why don't we just do away with state legislators, and voting, if the high court is going to start dictating what we should or should not do, or how we should or should not act?The time has come, American Christians, to know what you believe, and to boldly declare the Truth, understanding the cost. Let us go out, in God's strength and be a witness for what He says we should do with our lives!

"Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth." Romans 2:2 (emphasis added)
Let this be our anthem - stand on God's truth, and reach out to those who are questioning their sexuality, with God's love and mercy.
