(Re-blogged) Like Ancient Rome, America is Gluttonous

Doug Phillips, Founder of Vision Forum Ministries, gave a sermon this morning after the Reformation of Food and Family Conference entitled “The Truth about Gluttony.”

He said, “Ancient Rome participated in the ultimate gluttony. They would sit down and literally eat 8 full meals in one evening. And after each one of those meals they would force themselves to throw up in the vomitoriums so they could continue eating before they burst. It wasn’t a genetic problem. It was a sin problem.

“The national pastime for America is gluttony. Excess is everywhere. America the Gluttonous. Gluttony is idolatry - when our belly has become our god.” said Mr. Phillips.

“I believe that gluttony is as much a sin as drunkenness,” said C.H. Spurgeon.

Paul reminds us in Philippians 4:5, “Let your moderation be known unto all men.”

And in Proverbs 23:20-21, the Bible says, “Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.”

Adam McManus note: It is high time the Church of Jesus Christ addressed the sin of gluttony. No longer should it be the overlooked sin among American Christians. Gorging on third and fourth helpings of fried chicken and banana cream pie at the church pot luck will become a thing of the past if we obey the clear teaching of Scripture which prohibits gluttony.
