Because the days are evil...

"15 See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, 16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
17 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord
is. 18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another in the fear of God."

Ephesians 5:15-21

June 6, 2011

Today is the 67th anniversary of the D-Day landings on Normandy beach in France.
"June 6, 1944, 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. General Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which “we will accept nothing less than full victory.” More than 5,000 Ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by day’s end on June 6, the Allies gained a foot- hold in Normandy. The D-Day cost was high -more than 9,000 Allied Soldiers were killed or wounded — but more than 100,000 Soldiers began the march across Europe..."

Although I don’t personally know anyone who fought on those rugged beaches, I benefit from the heroics of those brave men who fearlessly stormed up those rock cliffs in order to repulse a vicious foe – Hitler.

Today I say thank you to those who fought at Normandy, thank you for doing something that seemed impossible, thank you for putting all thought of comfort or home behind you and squaring your shoulders and taking those beaches like the brave soldiers you were!  Thank you for your service, and for your example.  God bless you and may there be many more men in our day who follow in your heroic footsteps.

Summer is here! {simple things}

Birds egg

This past Monday - Memorial Day, saw the beginning of Summer for many of us here in the southwest.  Warmer temperatures, combined with the end of another school for many brought about the excitement many feel at this season of the year.  And although many of us enjoy the great outdoors, Texas can be brutal in the summer.

Delicate lace
Of course with summer come thoughts of vacation, spending more time with friends, and a general longing to have fun!

Funk & Wagnalls
Summer makes me want to read books, books and more books.  And to watch films - whether old or new, action, adventure or romance.

Each season is unique, different, special.  I am so thankful that God keeps His promises and expects us to obey Him as well.

With summer comes the 4th of July, Labor Day, and a whole host of summer block parties, grill offs, and birthday get togethers.  For our family, we will celebrate three summer birthdays, and perhaps do so with our extended family.

It is a time to say "thank you" to those who have served our country, to our parents, siblings, teachers, grandparents and friends.  To express gratitude that we have reached another enjoyable season of the year.

Summer causes me to want to smell the flowers, and walk amongst the plants in our garden.  To take twilight walks with family, or play at the park in the cool of the evening.  To swing on swings, and run through sprinklers, to cheer on my siblings as they hustle around a baseball field, or play basketball on the court.  How about a picnic anyone?  Those are things of summer that I love.

What are some of your favorite things about this season?  Won't you share them. :)

Praying blessings over your children

I was browsing Jessica's blog, which I enjoy reading from time to time, and came across a list she had posted on her fridge.  The list entitled: Scriptural Blessings to pray for your Children is from NavPress, and looks totally worthwhile, whether or not one has children.  I can pray these things for my siblings.

Here is my summary of what the list says:

Blessing children is very scriptural (Gen. 27:26-29; 49:1-28; 1 Pet. 2:9; Num. 6:22-27)

"Then his father Isaac said to him, “Come near now and kiss me, my son.” 27 And he came near and kissed him; and he smelled the smell of his clothing, and blessed him and said:

“ Surely, the smell of my son
Is like the smell of a field
      Which the LORD has blessed.

28 Therefore may God give you
      Of the dew of heaven,
Of the fatness of the earth,
And plenty of grain and wine.

 29 Let peoples serve you,
And nations bow down to you.
      Be master over your brethren,
And let your mother’s sons bow down to you.
be everyone who curses you,

      And blessed
be those who bless you!”  Genesis 27:26-29

"22 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 23 “Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, ‘This is the way you shall bless the children of Israel. Say to them:
 24 “The LORD bless you and keep you;
25 The LORD make His face shine upon you,
      And be gracious to you;

26 The LORD lift up His countenance upon you,
      And give you peace.”’
“So they shall put My name on the children of Israel, and I will bless them.”  Numbers 6:22-27

1. Assurance of Salvation (Jn. 3:16; 10:28-29; 1 Jn. 5:13)

"16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."  John 3:16

"28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand."  John 10:28-29

"13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God."  1 John 5:13

2. Intimacy with God (Ex. 33:11; Ps. 27:8; 34:8; 42:1-2)

"11 So the LORD spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. And he would return to the camp, but his servant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, did not depart from the tabernacle."  Exodus 33:11

"8 When You said, “Seek My face,”
My heart said to You, “Your face, LORD, I will seek.”
  Psalm 27:8

"8 Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good;
is the man who trusts in Him!"  Psalm 34:8

"1 As the deer pants for the water brooks,
So pants my soul for You, O God.
2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When shall I come and appear before God?Psalm 42:1-2

3. Spiritual Blessings (Eph. 1:3-14; 3:17-19; 5:8-10)

"3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, 5 having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.
7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace 8 which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence, 9 having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself, 10 that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth—in Him. 11 In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, 12 that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory.
13 In Him you also
trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory."  Ephesians 1:3-14

"17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height— 19 to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God."  Ephesians 3:17-19

"8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), 10 finding out what is acceptable to the Lord.Ephesians 5:8-10

4. Confidence in Prayer (1 Jn. 4:14-16; Matt. 7:7-11)

"14 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him."  1 John 5:14-15
"7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? 11 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!"  Matthew 7:7-11

5. Repentance (Ps. 32:1-2; 1 Jn. 1:5-9)

"1 Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven,
Whose sin is covered.
 2 Blessed
is the man to whom the LORD does not impute iniquity,
         And in whose spirit
there is no deceit."  Psalm 32:1-2

"1 Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. 4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 5 Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
The Certainty of God’s Witness
6 This is He who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not only by water, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth. 7 For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. 8 And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one.
9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; for this is the witness of God which He has testified of His Son."  1 John 1:5-9

6. Sanctification (2 Cor. 3:18; Jas. 1:2-4; Heb. 12:5-11)

"18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord."  2 Cor. 3:18

"2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing."  James 1:2-4

"5 And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons:

“ My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD,
Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him;
For whom the LORD loves He chastens,
And scourges every son whom He receives.”

7 If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? 8 But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. 9 Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected
us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness. 11 Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it."   Hebrews 12:5-11

7. Hope and Rest (Jer. 29:11; Matt. 11:28-30; Rom. 15:13; Phil. 4:6-7)

"11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope."  Jeremiah 29:11

"28 Come to Me, all
you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”  Matthew 11:28-30

"13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.Romans 15:13

"6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."  Philippians 4:6-7

8. Comfort (Matt. 5:4; Jn. 14:16-18)

"4 Blessed are those who mourn,
For they shall be comforted."   Matthew 5:4

"16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.
"  John 14:16-18

9. Freedom (Jn. 8:31-32, 36)

"31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”  John 8:31-32

"36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed." John 8:36

10. Friendships (Eccl. 4:9-12; Prov. 27:5-6; 1 Cor. 15:33)
"9 Two are better than one,
Because they have a good reward for their labor.
10 For if they fall, one will lift up his companion.
      But woe to him
who is alone when he falls,
he has no one to help him up.
       11 Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm;
But how can one be warm
12 Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him.
And a threefold cord is not quickly broken."  Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

"5 Open rebuke is better
      Than love carefully concealed.
       6 Faithful
are the wounds of a friend,
But the kisses of an enemy
are deceitful."  Proverbs 27:5-6

"33 Do not be deceived: “Evil company corrupts good habits.”  1 Corinthians 15:33
